UK Marines Board Sanctioned Russian Shadow-Fleet Tanker in Baltic

The interdiction marks one of the first physical enforcements of Western sanctions against the network of obscure carriers Moscow uses to move crude.

British forces boarded a sanctioned oil tanker linked to Russia's so-called shadow fleet, marking one of the most visible enforcement actions yet against the network of older, opaquely owned ships Moscow has used to keep crude flowing above the G7 price cap.

UK officials said the vessel was intercepted in international waters and that the operation was coordinated with allies. The tanker, already on US and EU sanctions lists, is among hundreds of ships acquired by little-known operators since 2022 and routed through flag-of-convenience registries to evade Western insurance and shipping rules.
