Nasdaq Drops 1.3% as Chip Stocks Weigh; Dow Holds

What Happened in Markets Today

U.S. equities closed in opposite directions Monday, with the Nasdaq bearing the day's steepest losses while the Dow and small-caps finished in the green. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.29% to 26,174.71, giving up 343 points on the session. The S&P 500 slipped 0.33% to 7,475.46. The Dow Jones Industrial Average bucked the trend, adding 0.29% to close at 51,712.71, while the Russell 2000 outperformed with a gain of 0.83% to 3,004.40. The CBOE Volatility Index rose 3.2% to 17.32, its highest close in recent sessions, underscoring the unease concentrated in large-cap growth names.
